IDEM GARR AAI
IDEM is the italian national federation for universities and research institutions for authentication and authorization
IDEM enables you accessing several federated services making use of your institutional digital identity. For example, you can access electronic magazines from wherever you are making use of the same username and password you daily use for your university’s wifi network and email. The great majority of the universities and all major research institutes already take part in IDEM.
The GARR IDEM AAI service is the federation operator. It ensures high quality and effective technical operation of the Federation, enforces compliance to relevant standards, in agreement with other federation operator at the European scale and Worldwide

Institution connected to the GARR network can join the IDEM federation as a members. Third parties and other organisations can join as partners, to provide own services to the federation members

IDEM operates within the education and research community connected to the GARR network, supporting the adoption of a common framework for accessing online resources

Join to Federation
Who can join?
All organisations connected to GARR, the Italian National Research Network (i.e. Universities and research organizations) can join the Federation as full members. In addition, third-party organizations (i.e. publishers, software /service providers etc), can join the Federation as partners in case they provide relevant contents or services to the education and research community. For both, participation is subject to the IDEM Policy Committee‘s approval.
Signing the Member Accession Form or Memorandum of Understanding
To become member of the Federation, organizations must sign either the Member Accession Form (for members), or the Memorandum of Understanding (for partners), and send two copies of the signed document to Consortium GARR , Via dei Tizii, 6, 00185 Roma. In addition, a pdf copy should be sent to

Approval by the Federation
Once the signed Member Accession Form or the Memorandum of Understanding has been received, your membership application will be submitted to the IDEM Policy Committee for approval. The IDEM Federation will notify applicants about the approval or rejection of their request.
Moving to the Production Environment
Once the member/partner application has been approved by the IDEM Policy Committee, the IDEM GARR AAI Service will be available to assist you with transitioning your services from the test environment to the production mode.

please proceed with registering its metadata in the IDEM test federation by means of the Registry

The IDEM service provides useful guides to install and configure a Service Provider (SP). Once the installation has been completed, please proceed with registering the Metadata in the Registry

Did you already submit the Metadata via the Registry ? The following ones are the next steps:
IDEM service will receive from the Registry the notification of the new entity and, after approval, will send you instructions to configure it - available on wiki IDEM
After having sent the subscription/registration documents, if the configuration in complete, once the metadata are complete too, and tests have provided positive results, ask via email to
